Narai Wharram For Sale

Available through West Coast Yachting LTD.  info@westcoastyachting.co.uk

Wharram Narai MKII Catamaran for sale - asking £24,500

The Narai is one of James Wharram's earlier and more classic designs, with 'Polynesian' lines which give her a very pretty, well proportioned shape sadly lacking from some more modern multihull designs. To quote Wharram's own website, Narais "attract the pioneering type"!
A large proportion of Wharram catamarans are home-built and this one, Sweet Thursday, is no exception. If you are considering a Wharram, however, this fact and the accompanying character and idiosyncrasies that are found in home-made boats are unlikely to put you off. The Wharram is not like other yachts, they are an unique phenomenon and quite fascinating to behold close-up. Fast and very seaworthy, they are the vessel of choice for the free-thinking, self-supporting sailor who will not be tied down by convention - or large marina bills for that matter! A boat like this can be continuously maintained without ever visiting a boatyard or slipway; she can be beached and worked on at any sheltered bit of tidal shoreline with the minimum of difficulty. In addition, the value-for-money cannot be overlooked; for the price of an old, entry-level, sub-30-foot mono-hull you can have a 40-foot yacht with 4 double berths and the ability to cross oceans!
This boat has been very well built by the current owner over a long period, being completed and launched in 1994 / 95. She is constructed of 3/8" marine plywood with laminated 3/4" douglas fir structural timbers. Extensively epoxied on deck there are no leaks and through his continuous maintenance the owner has not allowed any rot to set in. Iroko sacrificial bands on the keels help with taking the ground, and in recent years plywood shelter decks have been added over the 'cockpits' to provide some respite from the UK weather!
Ketch rigged with loose-footed gaff-type mains (spritsail rig) and twin cutter forestays she can be easily handled by two people or even single-handing is possible.
In 2008 she was fitted with a new Yanmar 3YM-30 diesel engine centrally mounted on deck, driving through a new 'Sonic' retractable drive leg. This installation has had minimal use since fitted, and gives the boat true cruising ability in all (including windless or strong tidal) conditions which may not be the case on similar yachts powered by an outboard.
Double berths fore and aft in both hulls sleeping 8 in total. Galley in port hull with watermaker. Navigation area in stbd. hull with retractable chart table. Heads in stbd. forward fo'csle compartment. Massive deck space. Lots of storage space around the boat.
The owner is now down-sizing to a smaller production catamaran and with some reluctance has decided that he cannot keep 2 boats so Sweet Thursday has to go. She is well worth viewing and anyone considering this kind of catamaran, or even just curious about Wharrams in general, is invited to make contact. While most new owners will want to personalise a boat like this, there is no serious work required to the yacht and she is ready to sail away.
